I was almost hit by a car this morning.
I was walking home after dropping my son off at school when a car drove less than an inch in front of me on the sidewalk. The driver did not stop nor did she apologize. When I told her that she almost hit me, she blamed me for being on my phone and not paying attention.
She was wrong.
Under NYS law she committed a reckless driving offense and can be charged immediately once a police report is filed.
But she insisted that the error was mine.
This story is just one example of the national empathy gap I identified back in 2017 when I joined The Takeaway as host. I also called out the wealth gap and the truth gap (now called misinformation) as national ills which, if left to grow, would end up affecting this country for the worst.
Sadly, my prediction came true.
Let’s talk about it and how we can do better.
